Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)

We are now accepting The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) at Grimsby Lake Dental, which is a significant federal government program aimed at improving access to oral healthcare for eligible Canadian residents. Here’s a detailed overview:

Purpose and Goals

  • The primary goal is to provide dental care coverage to uninsured Canadians who meet specific eligibility criteria, particularly those with lower incomes.
  • It seeks to reduce financial barriers to accessing essential dental services, thereby improving overall health and well-being.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the CDCP, individuals must meet the following criteria:

  • Have no access to dental insurance.
  • Have an adjusted family net income of less than $90,000.
  • Be a Canadian resident for tax purposes.
  • Have filed a tax return in the previous year.

Rollout Phases

It is being implemented in phases:

  • Seniors: Enrollment began with seniors aged 87 and above in December 2023, with subsequent age groups being added in the following months.
  • Adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate and children under 18: Application opens in June 2024.
  • All remaining eligible Canadian residents: Will be able to apply online in 2025.

Coverage

It covers a range of oral health care services, including:

  • Preventive services (e.g., cleanings, sealants).
  • Diagnostic services (e.g., examinations, X-rays).
  • Restorative services (e.g., fillings, root canal treatments).
  • Oral surgery (e.g., extractions).
  • Dentures.

It is important to understand that the CDCP covers a portion of the costs, and co-payments may be required depending on adjusted family net income.

Co-payments

The amount of co-payment varies based on adjusted family net income:

  • No co-payment for those with an adjusted annual family net income under $70,000.
  • A 40% co-payment for those with an adjusted annual family net income between $70,000 and $79,999.
  • A 60% co-payment for those with an adjusted annual family net income between $80,000 and $89,999.

Administration

The CDCP is managed by Health Canada and administered by Sun Life.

Key Points

  • The CDCP is a government dental benefit, not a free dental program.
  • It is designed to work in coordination with existing provincial and territorial dental programs.
  • It is crucial to verify coverage with your dental provider before undergoing treatment.
